The lawyers of Vaughn Petitt Legal Group, PLLC offer more than 100 years of experience representing individuals, private businesses and local governments in civil lawsuits. CAROL SCHURECK PETITT

Carol is the epitome of an intelligent and hard-working attorney. She is dedicated to her clients and possesses nearly thirty years of civil litigation experience. She is a native of Oldham County, Kentucky where she attended and graduated from Oldham County High School. Carol then graduated magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky before obtaining her Juris Doctor degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. Carol is a past member of the Board of the Directors of the National Kidney Foundation. She is the current Chairperson of the Louisville Bar Association ADR/Mediation Section and a member of the Volunteers of America, Positive Change Society.


Carol is licensed to practice in all state and federal courts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky as well as the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. She has litigated a wide variety of civil cases, having successfully tried numerous cases to a verdict. The list of practice areas in which she is accomplished is extensive - personal injury, premises liability including slip- and trip-and-falls, traumatic brain injuries, toxic torts, wrongful death actions - are all examples of cases that Carol has successfully handled. Carol has also represented local governments, individuals, businesses, employees and employers in administrative and traditional judicial forums involving allegations of sexual harassment, age, gender and/or race discrimination. Whether your action involves one of the types of cases listed above or allegations of civil rights violations, Whistleblower complaints or wrongful termination, Carol will represent you as an ethical, experienced, knowledgeable and zealous advocate.


In addition to being an accomplished trial attorney, Carol is a court-approved Certified Civil Mediator where she puts her experience to work to assist others in resolving cases.

KYLE M. VAUGHN

Kyle grew up in Louisville where he graduated in the top three percent of his class from Seneca High School. Kyle is an Eagle Scout and a graduate of the University of Louisville where he was awarded a degree in Criminal Justice. Kyle subsequently graduated cum laude with his Juris Doctor degree from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. Later he was asked to return to the University of Louisville as an adjunct professor of Police Civil Liability in the Executive Leadership Course at the Southern Police Institute. Strong belief in service to the community and the musical education of our youth led Kyle to serve on the Board of Directors of the Louisville Youth Orchestra. When not working, Kyle spends his time occasionally hacking at golf, but mostly with those most important; family.


Kyle is licensed to practice law at all levels of state and federal courts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, as well as the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States. He believes in providing ethical, effective and efficient representation of his clients while always remembering that they are the reason he is practicing law. Kyle handles claims of personal injury, premises liability, contractual review and disputes, real estate law, civil rights violations, excessive force and Kentucky Consumer Protection Act violations. Kyle litigates employment law cases before the Kentucky Human Rights Commission as well as in civil court, and he has represented clients in matters involving race, gender and age discrimination as well as hostile work environment claims, including sexual discrimination. Kyle has handled matters on behalf of individuals, private businesses (both small and just starting out as well as established, large entities) and virtually all level of city and county governments and their officials and employees within the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

ALICIA L. STOFFERAHN

Alicia is the head of the firm’s family law section. Most recently, Alicia served as Staff Attorney to the Honorable Doreen Goodwin, Family Court Judge in Kentucky’s Twelfth Judicial District. Alicia graduated from Ballard High School and attended the University of Louisville, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology. She subsequently obtained her Juris Doctor from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. Alicia began working in Louisville’s legal community while still in high school and over the years has worked for a diverse group of local firms in countless practice areas, both as staff and a practicing attorney.


Alicia’s family law practice is focused primarily on divorce, child custody, support and parenting time issues, adoption and domestic violence. She strives to bring compassion and professionalism, as well as experience, to each case, helping clients through a time in their life often filled with stress and uncertainty. Alicia became licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 2008 is also licensed in the Eastern and Western Federal Districts of Kentucky and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. In her free time, Alicia fancies herself an amateur chef and artist. She enjoys spending time with friends, family and her two pets.


TESS FORTUNE

Tess was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she attended Marquette University and earned a degree in Public Relations. In 2015 she moved to Kentucky to pursue her legal education at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law. While a law student, Tess began practicing under a limited practice license and represented clients in the Family Courts.


Tess is licensed to practice law in all state and federal courts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Tess handles claims involving personal injury, premises liability, civil rights violations, excessive force and contractual disputes. Tess is devoted to providing attentive and effective representation for all clients. In her free time, Tess enjoys spending time with family and her pets.


Judge David P. Bowles (Ret.)

Judge Bowles is a lifelong resident of Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated magna cum laude

from the University of Louisville, earning a B.S. Police Administration, and cum laude from

The Brandeis School, obtaining his Juris Doctor. In 2001, he retired at the rank of Lieutenant

from the Jefferson County Police Department in Louisville, Kentucky, then practiced law in

Kentucky state and federal courts. Judge Bowles is a forty-two-year member of Fraternal Order

of Police Lodge #614.


Judge Bowles practices public sector insurance defense, civil rights defense, employment law

and probate matters. His former clients included police officers, jailers, elected officials, and

local governments across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.


He was elected to the bench in 2008 and served fourteen years as a District Judge in the 30 th

Judicial District of Kentucky. During his tenure, he served as Chair of the Louisville Metro

Criminal Justice Commission; as a Member of the Judicial Conduct Commission; and, most

recently, as President of the Kentucky District Judges Association. He taught probate law to

District Judges across the Commonwealth.



Judge Bowles is available for mediation in probate and public sector matters.


Ronnie Mills

Ronnie is a proud Kentucky native, born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky where he graduated as a valedictorian of duPont Manual High School. Thereafter, he graduated summa cum laude from Murray State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in computer information systems. Finally, Ronnie obtained his Juris Doctor from the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville. While attending law school, Ronnie extensively studied constitutional law, including Kentucky’s first ever course on the Constitution of Kentucky.


Along with his studies, Ronnie spent time at the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney in Louisville, Kentucky where he clerked and practiced felony criminal prosecution under a limited license. Prior to joining the firm, he served the Commonwealth of Kentucky as Staff Attorney to Circuit Judge Rodney D. Burress in Bullitt County. In his free time, Ronnie enjoys spending time outdoors with family, friends, and his corgi-mix, Ziva.


Matt Bastin

Matt was born in Lexington, Kentucky and grew up in Nicholasville, Kentucky. He attended the University of Kentucky where he was awarded a degree in Business Administration. Matt subsequently attended the College of Law at Syracuse University in New York, where he earned his Juris Doctor degree with Dean’s List Honors in 2014. After being admitted to the New York Bar Association, Matt practiced as a civil litigation attorney just outside of New York City before returning to Kentucky to practice law in 2015.

Immediately before joining the firm, Matt practiced nearly seven years as a trial attorney at the Louisville Metro Public Defender’s Office. There he gained extensive trial experience in Jefferson County District and Circuit Courts, having tried numerous cases to jury verdict and supervising other attorneys at the public defender office.

Matt is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association and Louisville Bar Association. He is admitted to practice law in the state of Kentucky as well as the Federal District Courts of Eastern and Western Kentucky. Matt treats everyone with respect and professionalism. He is devoted to providing exceptional representation and zealous advocacy to all his clients. When not working, Matt enjoys cooking, being active in the outdoors, and spending time with his family, including his wife and their three pets.


Connor Sturgill

Connor grew up in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Western Kentucky University in 2020, where he graduated summa cum laude and was recognized as a Scholar of the College for maintaining the highest grade point average amongst the business school’s graduating class. Following undergrad, Connor enrolled at the Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville and is currently a full-time student working toward earning his Juris Doctorate, which he expects to receive in the Spring of 2023. During his time in law school, Connor has received numerous awards for earning the highest grade in various courses and has consistently been recognized as one of the top academic performers within his class. 




Connor first joined the Firm during the summers of 2019 and 2020 as a runner. Upon completion of his first year of law school in 2021, Connor returned to the firm as a law clerk, assisting the firm’s talented attorneys on a wide variety of matters. When he is not working or doing homework, Connor most enjoys spending time with his wife Erin and their labradoodle puppy Cooper.


Jillian M. Sauer

Jillian was born and raised in Oldham County. She graduated in the top 5% of her class from Assumption High School before earning her bachelor’s degree in political science from Bellarmine University, graduating summa cum laude. Jillian attended law school at the University of Louisville, where she graduated magna cum laude. During her second year of law school, she became a certified family court mediator and participated in the Edwin H. Perry mediation clinic. In her third year of law school, Jillian obtained her limited license to practice and represented clients in various family court proceedings, including domestic violence matters, custody matters, and divorces. Prior to joining our team at Vaughn Petitt, Jillian worked for several law firms in Oldham and Jefferson Counties, gaining experience in probate, estate planning, real estate, and civil litigation matters. When she’s not at work Jillian enjoys reading, baking, and spending time with family, friends, and her cattle dog, Dolly.


MARTI N. YOUNG

Paralegal/Office Manager

Marti grew up in Mt. Clemens, Michigan before moving to Kentucky. Marti is an incredibly hard working and intelligent paralegal who also moonlights as our office manager. Marti has significant experience assisting with complex real estate matters, long term disability, medical malpractice, products liability and general litigation.


Amie Bibelhauser

Paralegal

Amie was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended Sullivan University, where she earned an associates degree in Justice & Public Safety Administration. Amie began her career with VP Legal as the Firm’s receptionist where her incredible work ethic and positive attitude soon became apparent, resulting in a promotion to litigation paralegal. In her personal time, she enjoys spending time with her husband Aaron, friends and family.


Chelsey Kiper

Paralegal

Chelsey is a native of Breckinridge County, Kentucky and graduated from Breckinridge County High School. She carries a Bachelor of Science in Music Business from Murray State University and is a Certified Kentucky Paralegal with experience in motor vehicle accidents and public sector defense litigation.


While not working, Chelsey enjoys gardening and other outdoor activities with her husband Jesse and two daughters. She is also a vocalist for a local band in Meade County where you may find her covering the likes of rock classics to current hits.
